Maquoketa --nicknamed the Timber City-- is a city located in Jackson County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,112. It is the county seat of Jackson County.
U.S. Highway 61 adjoins the city, and the city benefits from traffic between Dubuque, Iowa and the Quad Cities. Iowa Highways 62 and 64 also pass through the city.
Maquoketa Caves State Park is located a few miles Northwest of the city.
Maquoketa is located at 42°4'1" North, 90°39'58" West (42.066901, -90.666238).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.0 km2 (3.5 mi2). 8.9 km2 (3.5 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.04 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.86% water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 6,112 people, 2,614 households, and 1,599 families residing in the city. The population density is 684.0/km2 (1,773.3/mi2). There are 2,797 housing units at an average density of 313.0/km2 (811.5/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 98.10% White, 0.16% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.34% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,614 households out of which 29.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the city the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $28,984, and the median income for a family is $36,705. Males have a median income of $25,819 versus $19,421 for females. Maquoketa was founded in 1838 with the building of a log cabin by J.E. Goodenow and Lyman Bates. Originally the it was called Springfield, but later decided to change its name in March 13, 1844 to Maquoketa due to fact that there were already numerous towns and cities named Springfield. In 1853 the town became incorporated. The historic Hurstville Lime Kilns are located just north of the city.
